Hotel Excelsior
Venice, Italy
My husband and I first discovered the Excelsior Hotel Venice years ago, on our honeymoon.
When we found our way back there last April,
we arrived on Lido Island as a family of four.

It was all still here: the view of the Adriatic Sea from our room, the cappuccinos and croissants on the beachfront veranda. The Moorish archways, the baby-blue vanity table, the Murano-glass sconces, the marble sinks.
On summer mornings, we'd linger over breakfast on the terrace of La Taverna restaurant,
steps from the private beach. In chilly April, the vast buffet had moved indoors to the Tropicana restaurant.
We caught the complimentary water taxi to Piazza San Marco, where we discovered that Gelatoteca SuSo scoops the ultimate gelato. We rode back to the hotel after dark, gazing at the view of the Palazzo Ducale from the lagoon as the kids fell asleep to the hum of the engine.
